Coloured Popcorn Kernels {The Popcorn Book by Tomie de Paola}
The author for November’s Virtual Book Club for Kids is Tomie de Paola. This is another author that we had never heard of until participating in this book club. He is a great author and has written a lot of kid’s books. The book of his that we picked is The Popcorn Book. This is a great story about two boys making popcorn. As one boy is making the popcorn, the second boy is reading about the history of popcorn and sharing some interesting facts about it as well. Some of the facts and history of popcorn was very interesting. Did you know that the best way store popcorn kernels is in the fridge? I didn’t know that.
Most of the facts and history was beyond Sammie’s level and interest, but she really enjoyed the boy making the popcorn, especially when they end up with popcorn everywhere And she agrees that eating popcorn is the best thing about popcorn
After the sucess of colouring our pumpkin seeds, I thought it would be neat to try and colour some popcorn kernels. I had no idea whether it would work or not, but we really wanted to try.
To colour the popcorn kernels, we used vinegar and food colouring.
We poured some vinegar into styrofoam cups, about 3/4 full and added lots of food colouring.
I poured a bunch of popcorn kernels into each cup until they were almost full. We left them to soak for at least 24 hours.
They turned out great! The neon green and yellow didn’t really change the colour of the kernels much, but the rest of the colours are so bright and colourful.
I would not recommend using these kernels to make popcorn, as I don’t know how the vinegar would affect the kernels or taste.
The craft that we decided to make with the coloured popcorn kernels was a corn cob collage.
I drew a corn cob shape, with leaves, onto a piece of poster board paper. We decided to use tissue paper squares for the leaves.
Sammie spread glue all over the corn cob part of the drawing.
Then she started sticking the coloured popcorn kernels to the paper. She just picked up handfuls of the kernels and dropped them onto the glue and pressed down on them to make them stick.
For the leaves, she used tissue paper squares, wrapped them around the end of a pencil, dipped it in glue and stuck it to the paper, the same as she did for our tissue paper and glue pictures. I gave her a variety of shades of green tissue paper to use.
Sammie’s finished coloured popcorn kernel cob of corn I love the look the corn cob, so pretty and colourful.
Sammie had a lot of fun playing in the coloured popcorn kernels after she was done with the craft. She sat there playing in the kernels for quite a while. She loved putting her hands in the kernels and letting the kernels run over and through her hands.
After the craft, Sammie asked to have some popcorn to eat. She wanted to make it like the boys do in the story, but we decided to microwave some instead.
While waiting for her popcorn to pop, she started playing “popcorn”. She would curl into a ball on the floor, and when I said “pop”, she would jump up and yell “pop”. lol
Sammie loves eating popcorn and could get enough She even asked for me to make some more, so that she could take some to school for her lunch.
