The author for the month of August is Kevin Henkes. We have spent a lot of time this month reading some of his books. We have read Lily’s Big Day, Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse, Bailey Goes Camping and a little set of books about Lily and her friends called, A Box of Treats.

We finally decided to do our activity for the month based on Bailey Goes Camping.

This is a cute little book about Bailey whose older siblings are going camping with the Bunny Scouts. Bailey wants to go with them but they tell him that he is too little. They tell him that all they do is  eat hot dogs, live in a tent, go swimming, fishing, hunting, tell ghost stories and fall asleep under the stars. His parents try to cheer him up by offering other things for him to do, but Bailey is too sad to want to do any of those things. Finally his mother comes up with a suggestion to go camping at home. So that’s what Bailey does. He gets to do all the things that his siblings are doing, but at home.

We decided to go pretend camping in our backyard. The girls set up a tent, collected rocks to make a fire pit, sticks to pretend to burn. I found some red, yellow and orange tissue paper to make their pretend fire. I also set up a bin of water, that we used as our small frog pond, to be used for their fishing pond.

I made up these little fish and fishing poles so that the girls could fish. The fish are cut from foam with paper clips attached to them. The fishing rods are dowels with strings on them. At the end of each string is a magnet to catch the fish Image may be NSFW.

After catching all their fish, they sat at the fire and roasted play dough hot dogs and the fish that they caught Image may be NSFW.

I was going to cook them some real hot dogs to eat, but neither of the girls wanted real ones.

When their food was all gone, they sat around the fire for a bit. Then they put the fire out and got into the tent and told ghost stories and pretended to go to sleep :

I think if it didn’t get quite so cool at night, Maddie would have liked to actually spent the night out there
